I joined Babcock Integrated Technology as an Apprentice Machinist when I was 18 after completing ‘A’ Levels at school. I wanted to do something that was hands on and practical, the Apprenticeship seemed to fit the bill. I had also completed a small amount of machining for my A Level Design & Technology which I had enjoyed.
The Advanced Craft Apprenticeship is 4 years overall duration. In the first year I completed a PEO (Performing Engineering Operations) NVQ, which is done on site, plus a day release to college once a week studying for a Level 3 Technical Certificate in Mechanical Engineering. If you have ‘A’ Levels you can go straight onto a HNC qualification. During the first 2 years I completed my Key Skills and received basic training in the all the relevant areas: Milling Machine, Lathe, Fitting Shop & Welding Bay by experienced trainers.
When I entered the 3rd year I went into the Machine Shop which is the area I will become skilled in, there is a choice of Machining, Fitting or Welding. Alongside this I am working towards a NVQ Level 3 in Machining. During my last 2 years I have received support and coaching from experienced machinists in the Machine Shop.
All the training is monitored and checked by Avon Vale Training who ensures that the framework is delivered in line with the current SEMTA framework. This is done by regular visits to site to discuss progress with Apprentices, their Team Leader and Line Manager.
The great thing about working here is the variety of work which we do. So far I have worked on components for a life raft system for the Dutch Navy and a variety of high integrity components for the nuclear and defence industry. Since entering my fourth and final year I am now programming and operating manual data input (MDI) CNC lathes and milling machines, which will give me the skills and understanding of machine practices to become a skilled machinist.
Babcock is very supportive throughout my training and further education. If you have the ability there are opportunities to progress.
