Romarsh was founded in 1969, and is now one of the world’s leading companies in the design and manufacture of wound power components.
Profile
Romarsh was founded in 1969, and is now one of the world’s leading companies in the design and manufacture of wound power components. As well as offering transformers and inductors, the company has particular expertise in the design and manufacture of components for the defence, medical, power generation and other industrial equipment markets.
The Challenge
Operating from 4,000m² premises in Calne, Romarsh supplies 60% of its products to overseas customers in Europe, North America, Japan and the Far East. With a turnover of around £10m and some 140 employees, the company is able to offer quality bespoke components anywhere in the world.
The Solution
Andrew Sanders (Romarsh’s Works Manager) says; “Government funding is usually available to support training costs. Currently under the ‘Train to Gain’ service we have six people working towards their Level 2 NVQ – ‘Performing Manufacturing Operations (PMO)’ which is all fully funded. Funding encouraged us to start proper staff development as there was little risk, but now we know the value of training we would certainly continue even if there was no funding available.”
The Results
“Training gives employees new skills and capabilities. It also helps them to understand their job better, how the business works, and the implications of what they do - affecting different departments such as Health & Safety or Quality Control. Training makes our staff happier. If people are happier they work better and stay longer. “
“Romarsh are a world leader in our field. A lot of our processes are unique, and our products are highly specialised. Therefore we were pleased to learn that there is an NVQ pathway which matches exactly what we do -“Manufacturing Transformers and Inductors”. There must be an NVQ for any industrial process” says Andrew.
“We would like every employee at Romarsh, top down, in all departments to have an NVQ. I’m currently doing a Level 4 in Management, and can say that its not easy but it is worthwhile. Avon Vale Training has been really helpful in our staff development programme. Their assessors have excellent people skills, which is important as training is all about people after all. They know how to adapt things to suit everyone individually, providing friendly support and encouragement when it is needed.”
