Profile
NP Automotive Coatings (Europe) Ltd is the UK arm of the Japanese multinational - Nippon Paint Ltd. They were set-up following a request by Honda for a dedicated automotive paint supplier to be based in Swindon. They employ over 50 people - most working in either production & warehousing or in the technical department.
The Challenge
Currently their main customers are Honda & Toyota. About 70% of the raw materials are imported from Japan, and are mixed to precise formulas to meet exacting standards. They have two separate production areas dedicated to solvent and water based coatings, together with a large warehousing facility. Warehousing is important as they hold sizeable stock levels to guarantee constant supply to car assembly lines. It also removes uncertainty in the long lead time of shipping raw materials from Asia.
The Solution
Recently the company reviewed their training activity and its inherent benefits. They contacted Business Link who provided advice and recommended Avon Vale Training to take things forward. Following a company presentation several employees were keen to gain Level 2 NVQs in “Performing Manufacturing Operations” (PMO) and “Warehousing, Distributing & Storage”.
The Results
Charles Bleathman (NP Automotive Coatings’ General Manager) has led the company’s new training drive.
“It has been a great success and we have had some very positive feedback. What has been really noticeable is the boost it gives to employee stature. Their commitment to their own self progression has meant they are better placed with in the company. They understand their jobs better and how they affect the company’s performance” says Charles.
“Avon Vale delivered training which was relevant to our business. They were professional and flexible and helped employees achieve their success. What was particularly good was their flexibility and the way they varied the pace of the course to suit each individual learner.”
“We are currently introducing a new appraisal system. This should encourage staff to consider their role in the company and identify any training requirements. I am sure that staff development will play and increasing role in our future” says Charles.
